ENVIRONMENTAL charity Groundwork's flagship Volunteer Project Assistant (VPA) programme, which began in the 1990s to provide work experience and opportunities to new graduates, has now been relaunched.
The programme has been running out of the Oldham-based regeneration charity since 1993, and has helped more than 2,000 people take their first steps into professional careers.
It aims to break the cycle of no job meaning people get no experience, so they can't get a job.
Past VPA's at Groundwork who have carved out impressive careers in a range of organisations include Andrew Darron, executive director at Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside, and Helen Taylor, chief executive of Mahdlo.
The programme is open to anyone who graduated from university in Greater Manchester in the past 12 months or graduates from other institutions now living in the region.
The scheme consists of a 12-week supported placement in Groundwork trusts to help participants gain the skills they need to find work in a highly competitive jobs market.
Marc Sunderland (25), from Rochdale, secured a job at Rochdale Boroughwide Housing after taking part in the VPA scheme.
He said: "While the job market is saturated with graduates looking for work, the VPA scheme enables graduates to fill that gap on their CV which can help them stand out from the crowd.
"Furthermore, the scheme can be tailored to suit the needs of the individual thus enabling them to get involved in something they are passionate about."
Vicki Devonport, executive director at Groundwork in Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Rochdale, said: "It is only when you hear the participants talk about what they have gained from the VPA programme and their aspirations for the future that you fully understand the difference we are making.
"Many local organisations and groups have benefited from the skills and efforts of the graduate volunteers.
"This is a real win-win for local businesses and organisations as well as a fantastic learning experience for the graduates."
Frances Muscatelli, VPA project co-ordinator, is keen to find more local organisations willing to provide placements for graduates looking to build skills and make connections.
To find out more about the VPA programme or if you believe your organisation could support a graduate volunteer, call Frances on 0161-785 7419 or email frances.muscatelli@groundwork.org.uk.
