THE first proposed location for a new social housing development has been revealed.
Last year ambitious plans were announced to build 200 properties at developments scattered across Oldham to help address the lack of affordable homes in the borough.
First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO), a not-for-profit housing association, has now confirmed proposals for 26 two and three bedroom homes at land off Keb Lane in Bardsley.
The properties would be available as part of a "rent to buy scheme", giving working households the chance to rent the property at an intermediate rent to give them the opportunity to save for a deposit to buy their first home.
The proposal is currently being promoted to nearby residents as part of a public consultation on the plans before an application is submitted for planning approval.
A FCHO consultation document said: "It is well documented that there is a national housing crisis and a demand for housing that is currently not being met.
"The Greater Manchester Strategic Framework sets out the required distribution of additional homes in the region. Oldham has been assessed to require 12,500 new homes, with an annual requirement of 625 homes.
"FCHO will continue a programme of building new homes across the region with the site at Keb Lane proposed to contribute to this much needed delivery.
"These much needed new homes will not only help address the need for housing but will provide employment for local people and help stimulate the local economy."
FCHO has already constructed 94 new homes and is exploring ways to increase the size of its programme further.
The firm works with Oldham Council and other local landlords to bring empty homes back into occupation and buys existing properties which private individuals may wish to sell, in order to increase the supply of affordable housing in Oldham.
