RESIDENTS had the chance to find out more information about proposals to construct a new filling station in Shaw during a drop-in session.

Asda, on Greenfield Lane, wants to build the petrol station within its current car park and urged the public to visit the store to learn more about what is being proposed.

Representatives from the superstore have already met with Shaw and Crompton's local councillors to discuss the plans and will be writing to residents in the area.

A planning application is expected to be submitted in due course.

The proposals have already received a mixed response with some residents eager to see the new addition to Shaw, which currently has only one petrol station.

Some have argued it could reduce the cost of fuel in the area and bring an element of competition between the two filling stations, which could provide benefits for consumers.

However, others such as resident Judith Haughton have raised concerns about the plans and the impact they could have on the local area.

Judith, who has lived in Shaw since 1978 and attended the consultation, said: "I am 100 per cent against the plans and I think they are a complete waste of time.

"Parking at the store is already an issue at peak times.

"And the plans state that the store will lose 25 parking spaces for the petrol station.

"If more people are coming to use the petrol station as well it will only make traffic and parking worse.

"I don't see the need for another petrol station in the area as there is already one purpose-built station on the main road.

"I can't see it having an impact on prices."
