ANOTHER new car park could be set to open in the town centre after plans to transform the former Oldham Sports Centre site into a 234-space facility were announced.
An application for full planning permission to extend the existing car park on Rock Street and provide an additional 172 car parking spaces has been submitted.
The sports centre, at land bounded by Rock Street, Lord Street and St Mary's Way, was demolished in summer last year following the opening of the new Oldham Leisure Centre.
Building material has been removed or crushed and the site has been fenced off to prevent access by the public since the demolition.
The existing car park, which is accessed off Rock Street, is still in operation and provides 74 car parking spaces in the town centre.
Under the plans, 15 existing bays will be lost where the current car park is modified internally to provide access to the proposed additional parking spaces, however access to the larger car park will remain via Rock Street.
The application states: "The car park is intended to supplement the Town Centre Car Parking provision on a medium term arrangement (up to five years) following the recent demolition of the Hobson Street Multi Storey Car Park."
Also included in the plans are nine disabled bays, extensions to the existing pedestrian routes, street lighting, landscaping and an additional three parking machines.
