A NEW rugby team is calling out for women to get involved in the sport and join their team.
Oldham RUFC ladies have only recently started out and they are welcoming any women who would be interested in joining the team.
Training takes place on Tuesdays from 8-9pm at Hathershaw College but as the weather improves training will be moved to the club and anyone interested in playing is welcome.
Deone' Blignaut, one of the founders, said the short term aim is to have an established women's age group - 16 and above - by the beginning of next season and also to try to establish a girls' U15 team within the same period.
They have also set their eyes on attending the Women's Rugby World Cup in Belfast in August to take part in a mini touch rugby festival, dependent on funding.
Long term they plan to be accepted into the women's leagues and arrange a few local tours and also visit Europe for a few rugby festivals.
As well as members, Deone' said they need help with sponsorship to establish their kit. A quiz night on the first three Thursdays of each month from 7.30pm at the Daisyfield Inn will take place to help raise funds. Entry is £1.50 per person with prizes up for grabs.
Speaking of the response the club has had so far Deone' said: "It promotes sportsmanship and teamwork , is great for fitness, you meet new people and make friends. It boosts confidence and importantly we have fun!
"It's not really been difficult to get ladies involved. They tend to worry about their body shape, fitness level, and ability. I can reassure you that rugby is probably one of the very few sports that caters for any body shape. Fitness will come in time as we offer structured training sessions and ability is taught.
"Also the element of contact puts some ladies off but once they experience a training session they soon realise and understand that playing safe is part of our core values.
"Like any sport you as a player have the responsibility to ensure that you act and react in a safe manner for yourself, your team-mates and your opponents."
She added: "Being part of a team, socialising and the elements of respect and values are such important parts of the rugby code."
