A PENSIONER was robbed in her home by two men, one of whom pretended to be from the council.
Police were called to Houghton Avenue, Hollinwood, shortly before 2.30pm last Wednesday, following reports that an 83-year-old women had been robbed of cash and other valuable items.
Two men approached the victim's house and knocked on the door and window to get the woman's attention.
One offender told the woman that he works for the council and was in the area to complete maintenance on houses in her neighbourhood.
He then showed her some ID and asked the woman to open the rear gate to the property, so that he could gain access to her garden.
The woman said this was not possible but allowed the offender into her property where she showed him to the kitchen.
The man distracted the victim by asking her to make him a cup of coffee, at which point a separate offender searched upstairs and took her money and valuable items.
It is believed the burglary happened between 11.15am and 2pm.
Resident Julie Ogden said she was home until she left to go to the vets shortly before 3pm, but did not see anything.
Mrs Ogden said: "When I got back from the vets I saw a lot of cars. I saw the police and forensics.
"I went over and asked if everything was alright.
"I was in at the time, but I didn't see anything. I didn't see anyone going in.
"It's a total shame. I've known her since I've lived her for 22 years. She's a lovely lady. I feel sorry for her."
Detective Constable Andrew Swettenham, of GMP's Oldham borough, said: "This burglary has taken advantage of a vulnerable, 83-year-old woman, in her own home.
"The incident must have been very traumatic for the woman, who also suffers from dementia.
"I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time or knows anything that can help our investigation to get in touch with us.
"You could hold the key to finding the offenders and retrieving the woman's treasured goods."
Anyone with information should call Oldham police station on 0161 856 9063 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
