A POTHOLE-riddled road could be resurfaced after local residents expressed concerns that bad weather could make it worse.

Manor Lane, in Stanedge, only has one property on it but leads to Manor Farm. The road leads on to Stanedge Foot Road, which has nine properties along it, and on to the A62.

State

The road was adopted which mean the local authority has an obligation to maintain it.

Heavy rainfall in the past has worn the road down and created gullies along the side.

One man, who wished not to be named, contacted the Chronicle, claiming that the council was reluctant to do any work on the road as there is only one property in Manor Lane.

He said: "We've been living here for 30 years.

"I know everybody is concerned about the state of that road.

"We get a lot of bad weather in winter. The road is very exposed.

"Eighteen months ago, a council workman came and took the tarmac off.

"There was no explanation for it at all.

"If there's a major incident, or a minor one, and someone requires an ambulance or fire engines they would get stuck in the gullies.

"There are big wagons that can't get up there.

"Our feeling, as council taxpayers, is that the council finds money for vanity projects ­- they can find millions and millions of pounds for that ­- but can't afford to do basic maintenance."

The Chronicle contacted the Oldham Council for a comment.

Councillor Fida Hussain, cabinet member for environmental services, said: "Manor Lane is an adopted one-track road that gives access to one property.

"The flooding on Boxing Day and last month has badly damaged the road's surface and in response our highways team is putting together a proposal for council funding to carry out resurfacing work."
