Shoplifter targets charity

A SHOPLIFTER has dampened festivities at a Shaw charity shop after stealing the first prize for its Christmas raffle.

The Children's Society's shop, in Market Street, was offering a Kindle as top prize in its fundraiser, before shop staff noticed it was missing last Tuesday morning.

The Kindle, which had kindly been donated, was on display high up on a shelf to help drum up entries for the raffle.

Staff are now looking for someone to donate a replacement top prize, before the draw takes place on Friday.

Shop manager Carol Forshaw said: "The last time someone remembers seeing the Kindle on display was last Monday lunchtime then we noticed it had gone missing on Tuesday morning.

Disappointing

"Only last month we had a pair of gold earrings stolen during a break-in, and now this.

"It's just really disappointing that anyone would steal from a charity like The Children's Society, which is raising money for some of our most vulnerable children.

"Our shop has wonderful supporters who bring us some fantastic donations and our volunteers work so hard so it's sad to think anyone would do such a thing.

"It's put a dampener on a lovely time of year but we have to keep at it for the sake of children who are going through really tough times."

Raffle tickets are still available in the shop at £1 for a strip of five.
