COSTELLA MARSHALL
THE mother from a talented, musical family from Clarksfield has died after battling stomach cancer.
Barbados-born former nurse Costella Elaine Marshall (77) died at Dr Kershaw's Hospice on Friday December 2, surrounded by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John (80), children Wayne, Melanie and Louise, and three grandchildren.
Melanie said: "A lot of people knew my mum. They didn't know she was ill. She wasn't one to broadcast things. It will come as a shock to a lot of people.
"She always put others before herself - that's why she became a nurse.
"You wouldn't have known she was 77. There was not a wrinkle. She was just beautiful."
Costella (nee Daniel) came to the UK in 1958 and married John Marshall shortly after she arrived.
They went on to have three children - Wayne, Melanie and Louise - and mostly lived in Prince Edward Avenue in Clarksfield.
Costella worked as an auxiliary nurse at Oldham Royal Infirmary while John worked at the Stationery Office in Chadderton.
She was an amateur pianist and choir singer at St Barnabas' Church in Clarksfield.
John also sung with Oldham Parish Choir. The couple passed on their love of music to their children.
Famous son Dr Wayne Marshall (55) travels worldwide as a conductor, virtuoso organist and solo pianist.
Melanie (54) is a renowned singer and actress who has appeared in Broadway and the West End.
Louise (44) is a singer and songwriter, who has also performed with artists such as Michael Ball and Robbie Williams.
UPDATE: Costella's funeral takes place on Wednesday (14) at St Mark's Church, Glodwick Road, at 1pm.
The family has asked for people not to give flowers but to make donations to Dr Kershaw's Hospice instead.
Enquiries can be made to Barlow's and Sons funeral directors on 0161 624 4301.
