A FORMER landfill site in Oldham that's being transformed into a community woodland will blossom with a tree-planting party on Saturday.
As reported in the Chronicle, Snipe Clough in Glodwick is being given a new lease of life thanks to environmental charity City of Trees, with support from TD GreenStreets and the Stoller Trust.
Benefits
The project, which began earlier this month, involves transforming two hectares of land into new woodland, planting over 4,000 trees which will create a green space for walkers, cyclists and residents.
A number of events have been held on the site involving local community groups with activities taking place including tree planting, woodland management and wildflower planting.
To mark National Tree Week, which runs until Sunday, City of Trees is hosting a week of activity across the region, culminating in the tree planting party at Snipe Clough.
Led by The Tree Council, National Tree Week inspires thousands of people across Britain to join forces and plant over a million trees during the UK's largest tree festival.
Kevin Wigley, of City of Trees, said: "Trees deliver a whole range of benefits from helping to tackle climate change, improving our health and wellbeing as well as providing essential habitats for wildlife.
"We urge the Oldham community to come along and get involved at our tree party - planting a tree is a fantastic way to connect with the nature on our doorstep and something we want everyone to experience.
"We hope to show people how important trees are, why we need to plant more of them, and protect the ones we have."
Members of the public of all ages are encouraged to come along and plant a tree, as well as take away a free tree to plant in their garden, or nurture in a pot at home.
Freebies
City of Trees will also be giving out 100 goody bags packed with freebies, on a first come, first served basis.
The project has been supported by Oldham Council, TD Direct Investing, The Stoller Charitable Trust, and the Woodland Trust.
The tree planting party takes place from 10am to 2pm. All equipment provided. For more information contact Kevin on 01618721660 or kevin@city of trees.org.uk. Www.city of trees.org.uk.
