THERE was a festive feeling across the borough on Friday evening when the Christmas lights came on in Chadderton, Failsworth and Shaw.

Chadderton Town Hall was lit up with bright lights draped across it and Failsworth saw its Christmas tree dressed in lights with the statue of Ben Brierley sporting a red Santa hat.

A Christmas market also took place in the ballroom of the Chadderton Town Hall where visitors could snap up festive goodies and gifts.

Meanwhile, entertainment and carol singing could be heard at Failsworth Pole prior to the lights switch on and revellers could also pick up a present for a pound or have their picture with Santa at his grotto.

Shaw saw Christmas stalls, pet the donkeys, the Scottish Pipers and a stage of entertainment with "Pamper Your Princess" characters during the lights switch on.

Delighted

There was a Santa's grotto where refreshments, carols from St Joseph's School Choir, face painters, reiki sessions and Santa could be found.

I Love Shaw Facebook group was delighted with the evening's lights and festivities and paid thanks to everyone who was involved in making the event possible.

It said: "Huge thanks to Shaw and Crompton Events Committee who work continually throughout the year to organise our wonderful Christmas lights switch on.

"They all devote their time voluntarily and without the planning and hard work, tonight's amazing event wouldn't have been possible. Thank you to all the local businesses, shops, traders, volunteers, councillors, staff at the Lifelong Learning Centre, GMP Royton and Shaw, Pamper Your Princess Party Parlour and mascots for entertaining us and keeping us all safe.

"On behalf of ILS and our community, thank you and have a wonderful festive season."

Shaw and Crompton councillor Howard Sykes said the event was very well attended and went very well.
