THIEVES took the wick when they stole hundreds of pounds worth of candles from an Oldham florist over the weekend.

The group broke into Miller's Florist, on Huddersfield Road, in the early hours of Saturday morning and grabbed up to 25 Yankee Candle branded items.

Barbara Jackson, owner, said she was awoken at 4.30am when her alarm company called to say the shop's security system had been set off.

She said: "I usually get up to go to the market at 5am so I had to arrange for a delivery and then I went to the shop.

"We had spent the day before cleaning and tidying up the shop before creating our Christmas display in the front window.

Upsetting

"All the girls worked so hard on it and I was worried it had all been destroyed."

Luckily when she arrived at the store the window display was still intact but shop's front door had been smashed.

Barbara said: "They'd broken the front door and crawled through into the shop.

"I think we had been targeted for the candles as they'd taken 20 to 25 of them.

"Some of the big ones are worth over £20 and they probably thought they'd be able to sell them on for themselves for a lot of money.

"It was very upsetting to find out we'd been burgled, for someone to come in and take what they want.

"But we are not going to let it get the better of us and we'll carry on."

She added that it will cost at least £150 to repair the door and they are updating their security system in a bid to deter others targeting the store.
