THE silver screen could strike gold for lucky Oldhamers.

Oldham Council is launching a special giveaway of prizes across the borough ahead of the public opening of the cinema complex at the Old Town Hall.

The state-of-the-art Odeon cinema - and six family friendly restaurants including Costa Coffee, Nandos, Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Molino Lounge - will begin opening in phases after a grand outdoor show on Friday next week.

To celebrate the historic milestone - and in honour of Nicola White recently winning our borough's first Olympic Gold medal for 108 years - the council will be hiding or offering the chance to win special "Gold Town Hall"-shaped tokens from this weekend.

The finder or winner of each is entitled to a special prize package including tickets for the new Odeon, vouchers for new restaurants and other popular ones in Oldham town centre, OCL gym passes, and Oldham Coliseum pantomime tickets.

Clues or information will be released on how to win each day via the @OldhamCouncil Twitter and Facebook pages using the #GOLDTownHall hashtag.

Local press and media are also involved, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for the chance to win some amazing family prizes.

The week-long giveaway will run until the public opening event on Friday next week, when the top prize - including a one-year pass for the Odeon cinema - will be given away: but you have to be there to win it.

Oldham Council leader Jean Stretton will launch the #GOLDTownHall competition tomorrow with a video clue on social media to lead residents to the first prize at 9am.

"The Old Town Hall cinema is a very special project for Oldham - and we also wanted to celebrate Nicola White's gold-medal achievement," she said.

"The restoration of this building and the work to bring Odeon and the new restaurants here has been about giving families a better town centre to enjoy.

"We have a fantastic set of prizes on offer to residents and will be giving away three this weekend.

"There will be another prize up for grabs each day next week and we will then give away three prizes on the day of our spectacular Old Town Hall opening event on Friday.

"Please bring your family along to that free outdoor opening event - which starts at 7.30pm. Not only will you witness an amazing free show, but you could also win the top competition prize, which includes a one-year pass to the Odeon cinema."
