Hang on in there, it’s going to be bumpy ride

It’s understandable that many of us will be starting 2011 with a feeling of trepidation, wondering if we will be faced with challenges on the same scale as those we encountered in 2010.

With the VAT increase, rises in fuel prices and the full impact of local government cuts still to be felt in some parts, the best that most of us can do is remain astute, continue monitoring the conditions we are operating in, and not be afraid to think differently if things aren’t working.

Results from the latest Chamber Quarterly Economic Survey indicate that trading for Oldham businesses continued to be tough. Businesses within the manufacturing sector seemed the most optimistic, many with positive export and investment intentions, suggesting that they expect conditions to improve throughout the coming year.

Our first networking lunch of the New Year took place last week at the Bower Hotel, Hollinwood, where social media expert Carl Silverstone made a presentation on the benefits of using social media to raise the profile of your business and better engage with customers and stakeholders.

He also give businesses some pointers on how to get started with platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.

Our Oldham Construction Sector events are also back up and running with the first one earlier today at the E3 Business and Enterprise Hub on Dowry Street in Oldham.

Finally, the Chamber is delighted to announce our support for the One Oldham Business Awards 2011.
