A FORMER gym owner has invested heavily in a new business — enabling older people to continue to live independently.

Mick Sheehan and his wife Jenny, from Uppermill, have opened a branch of the nationwide business Home Instead Senior Care in the village.

The High Street office serves people in their homes in the Saddleworth, Oldham and Tameside areas and such is the growing demand for the company’s award-winning care services that Mick, (37), is keen to encourage more local people to consider a career in caring.

He said: “We are committed to providing the highest levels of care to our clients and to be able to do that we need to employ a team of fantastic carers.

“We are always on the look out for more committed people who are keen to join a very rewarding profession and help make a real difference to our clients’ lives.”

The former owner of the Lifestyle Fitness Centre in Greenfield celebrated the formal opening of new business at Uppermill Conservative Club – directly opposite the company’s offices.

Glossop Brass Band provided a tuneful accompaniment to what was a busy event attended by clients and their families, Chris Davies MEP, Councillor Derek Heffernan, other local business people and contacts from the health care sector.

Chris Davies said: “It’s quality of life that really matters and help of this kind can make a huge difference.”

Councillor Heffernan added: “We all hope for both independence and dignity in our old age. The extra care that we receive can help to make that hope come true.” Jenny Sheehan, who works full-time in the health sector and will run the business on a part-time basis said: “We are delighted that so many people have been able to join us to celebrate the opening of the business.”
