Find your green fingers this National Gardening Week

With the sun making more of an appearance it’s time for those green fingered among us to head back into the garden.

Saturday marks the start of National Gardening Week, a chance to shine a light on the hobby and also give those who would rather let the grass grow a little too much an opportunity to discover just how handy they are with a spade and the odd plant pot.

The main focus of the week, which was first launched in 2010 by the Royal Horticultural Society, is to encourage people to grow their own produce right there in the back garden with their website offering plenty of hints and tips on how to do just that.

Now is also the perfect time of year to trim back those bushes, trees and hedges but if it’s a task which doesn’t interest you there are plenty of local businesses who will be more than happy to do the work for you.

Blakeman Trees has been doing just that since they were first established in the early 1990s by John Blakeman and Richard Blakeman who set off quite small doing hedges and trees, Richard climbed as John did the ground work and it soon took off employing other staff to join them. Richard went to Mysercough college and John followed doing day courses to keep up to date regulations. 

They now have within Blakeman trees three climbers with full NPTCC qualifications doing an array of tree work whether it's a small hedge, grass cutting for schools or care homes to large felling trees. They can also cater for all type of work. New to their equipment is a stump grinder which when they’ve felled a tree can be used to grind the roots out so it doesn't reappear again. 

All the chip from the trees is 100% recycled by Eddie Stobarts, they collect the chip for their renewable energy plants all over the UK. All the logs they take away are stored dried and split for log burners in winter.

So everything is recycled from every job.

So now is the time to flex those green fingers and turn your garden in to a summer paradise even Monty Dom would be proud of.
