Roughyeds' cup run comes to an end at Hull KR

Oldham's run in the Betfred Challenge Cup is over after a classy performance by Super League leaders Hull KR saw the Robins run out 40-0 winners at Sewell Group Craven Park.

Head coach Sean Long spoke of his pride as the Roughyeds enjoyed some encouraging spells in East Hull, but were ultimately undone by moments of quality from Willie Peters' side who ran in seven tries to nil.

"To go out there against the top of the table Super League team and have a real crack at them, I’m really proud of the lads,” Long told Roughyeds TV.

"We were in the fight, but a few individual errors cost us.

"If we can bottle that up going forward into the Championship, then we won’t be far off."

Oldham enjoyed a positive start but were undone straight from a scrum when winger Tom Davies beat former Rovers star Kieran Dixon in the corner.

Danny Richardson converting from the touchline for a 6-0 lead.

Jai Whitbread added a second as he strolled in from a Tyrone May pass on the last tackle as Oldham fell 12-0 behind and left winger Lee Kershaw converted from another scrum for a 16-0 Robins lead.

Oldham then lost centre Iain Thornley to injury, forcing Elijah Taylor to play out of position for the remainder of the game, and former NRL centre Oliver Gildart crossed before the break as the Robins seized firm control at 22-0.

Oldham looked strong at the start of the second half and thought they had a try when Jumah Sambou sent Dixon in only for referee Tom Grant to rule a forward pass.

That was as good as it got for Long's men, as Gildart ran in a second, Bill Leyland capitalised on a dropped ball to stroll in for an easy score and full-back Jack Broadbent dummied his way over as KR ran in three second-half tries to book their spot in the quarter finals.

Long added: ""I thought we pulled them apart a few times and if we don't make those errors in our yardage it could have been a different game.

"I can't fault the efforts which was outstanding.

"We lost Iain Thornley so had to put Elijah at centre and I only had one fit body on the bench at the end.

"Thornley took a bang so hopefully it is just a dead hip or a burner.

"Lewis Baxter came off with an HIA but passed it and came back on.

"I told the lads that if they bottle that effort and defence against a well-oiled Super League machine and hold your gloves up then we won't be far off."

After back-to-back away games Oldham return to Boundary Park next Sunday afternoon for a huge Betfred Championship fixture against London Broncos who were relegated from Super League last year.

It should be a fierce contest and tickets are available by clicking here
