Oldham RLFC has announced Ste Fitzmartin as the head coach of the club’s first ever women's team.
Fitzmartin, who is 41, has a wealth of experience in the women’s game having been assistant coach at St Helens when the club won the Challenge Cup and the Super League Grand Final in 2021.
He has also had head coach roles at Salford Lions Women, Golborne Parkside and Haydock Warriors.
“I’m delighted to join Oldham. It’s a great opportunity to lead something from the very beginning and watch it grow,” said Fitzmartin.
“The club has been around for years and has a great history and they’re growing and I want to be a part of that.
"The women’s game has grown massively in the last few years and it’s great to be head coach of Oldham’s first ever women’s team.”
Fitzmartin’s journey into rugby league began as a player at Leigh East ARLFC under-7s level before he signed a professional contract with Warrington and he also represented Lancashire and Great Britain Under-19s.
His first foray into coaching began when he was in the Marines, which he served for ten years, when he played for the combined services team.
“I used to teach the new players how to play the game and I quite enjoyed passing on my knowledge.
“After I left, I started coaching at Leigh Rugby Union. While I was there, I coached the first ever team to win every game in one season and we did the League and Cup double,” he said.
Said Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton: “We are delighted to announce Ste Fitzmartin as the first ever Head Coach of an Oldham Rugby League Club women’s team.
“It’s a bit of history, as we start on another journey and with Ste’s enthusiasm I am looking forward to getting training started soon.
“His experience will be great for the team and he knows he will have the full support of everybody at the club.”
The club is also calling on any potential players who wish to get involved in the women’s side to get in touch via the social media pages or email: enquiries@roughyeds.co.uk
