Langtree's 'too good to miss' opportunity

Date published: 01 October 2018

Danny Langtree, whose eight years at Oldham are over, has spoken of the wrench he felt when he pulled off the Roughyeds jersey for the last time at Odsal.

"I'm 27 now, and Oldham has been a large part of my life since I was 19," said the try-scoring second-row forward, who has gone full-time with Super League club Hull FC on a two-year-deal.

He will be uprooting from his native St Helens to live in Hull and give the move his best shot.

Said 'Langers': "I didn't want to leave Oldham, but this was an opportunity that was just too good to miss.

"It will be a massive change for me, not just going full-time, but moving home and going over there.

"I wasn't looking to leave Roughyeds and I certainly wouldn't have done had it not been to such a big, good club like Hull.

"Now, I've got an opportunity to test myself at that level and see what I can do. It's going to be a big, new experience for me and I'm looking forward to it.

"At the same time it will be a big wrench to be leaving Oldham, all the lads and the terrific fans and everyone else at the club.

"We've been through a lot together over the last eight years - a large part of my life that I will never, ever forget."

It seems a long time ago now, but lots of fans will recall that when Langtree first joined Oldham he spent two seasons in the reserves along with the likes of Kenny Hughes, Phil Joy, Michael Ward and Steven Nield.

It was caretaker boss Martin Roden who first gave 'Langers' his senior chance in 2012 and he never looked back, cementing his place on the arrival of Scott Naylor and over the last six years becoming one of the best back-row forwards in League 1 and the Championship.

His record per season is as follows:

2012, 2 apps, 0 tries;

2013, 23 apps, 10 tries

2014, 24, 14

2015, 24, 13

2016, 26, 8

2017 23, 4

2018 26, 21

Total: 148 appearances, 70 tries, 280 points
