Rugby League: Oldham's Sammy Gee calls it a day

Oldham have confirmed that Sammy Gee, the Roughyeds' vice-captain for the past five seasons, has retired from professional rugby league.

Signed as a hooker, he has also played at full-back, centre, second-row and loose-forward in 107 senior games since Oldham coach Scott Naylor acquired his services ahead of the 2013 season.

Describing 30-year-old Gee's decision to hang up his boots as a "big loss" to the club, Naylor said he wanted his play-anywhere man to be part of next season's plans and he was disappointed Sammy was calling it a day.

Naylor added: "It is sad that he's going. I know what it's like to retire and I thought he was more than capable of doing another two or three seasons.

"We hoped he would stay because he gave us a lot of quality and he was a great lad to have around the club and especially in the dressing room.

"He will be a big loss, but he was sure he wanted to finish so we have to respect his decision.

"It does not mean I have to agree with it. As far as I am concerned it is very unfortunate to say the least, but it is time now for player and club to move on.

"Needless to say, Sammy goes with a massive thank-you for everything he has done for the club in the past five years. He leaves with the very best wishes of everyone at the club.

"As I say, he will be a big loss."
