Young England wing back signs for Latics

Date published: 15 January 2024

Latics have snapped up Sai Sachdev from Sheffield United.

The youngster joins the Boundary Park club on loan until the end of the season.

An England international through the age groups up until the Under 19s, the right-back made his Blades debut in the Championship back in 2022.

Latics boss Micky Mellon believes Sachdev’s youth and ambition will be of huge benefit to his squad.

“Sai fits the profile of what we’re looking for in an out-and-out wing-back," the manager said.

“He’s young, energetic and ambitious, those are qualities we want to bring to the football club.

“Young Will has done a fantastic job at right-back, we know he’s a centre-back but he’s stepped in and done great for us.

“I’m delighted to have Sai on board.”

Sachdev was born in Leicester, and was in the youth team at his home town club until 2017.

After leaving the Foxes, he spent time with local side Aylestone Park, before being snapped up by Sheffield United at 16.

Since then he’s made appearances for England U17s, U18s and U19s, and made his Sheffield United debut against Stoke City in October 2022.

After agreeing the loan until the end of the campaign, Sachdev admitted that he’s excited about making the step into first team football.

“I’m really happy to get this move done, I’ve been looking to make the step into men’s football this season," he said.

“Youth football is good, but playing for points which mean something every week is a different level, and something I’m looking forward to.

“I can’t wait to get going at Oldham.”

Sachdev will wear squad number 2.

He could be in line for a debut at the weekend after tomorrow night's (Tuesday) scheduled home game with Boreham Wood was postponed - for a second time - due to a frozen Boundary Park pitch.
