Neil Redfearn has returned to Latics to assist interim manager Steve Thompson.

Redfearn will work alongside Thompson during his caretaker spell in charge of the first team.

A figure synonymous with the most famous moment in Latics history, Redfearn's coaching career has taken him to Leeds United, where he progressed from U18 coach to first team manager, Rotherham, York and Newcastle U23s.

Paul Murray will also remain part of the coaching team, as well as Steve Collis, as the recruitment process for a permanent appointment continues.

Thompson said: “I’m really pleased to have Neil on board, he’s an exceptional coach and is someone I’ve known and trusted throughout my career.

“I came through the ranks at Bolton with Redders, we were both apprentices and made our debuts together so I’ve known him a long time.

“He very well-respected already at Oldham and as a coach he is a big asset for both myself and the club.

“We were manager and assistant at Leeds and we’ve always kept in touch.

"He knows how to get the best out of players, and I’m delighted to have him alongside Paul Murray and Steve Collis.”

Redfearn spent two years at Boundary Park between 1989 and 1991, the undoubtedly coming when he scored the winning penalty against Sheffield Wednesday to secure the Second Division title for Joe Royle's team.

He went on to play for a number of other clubs, most notably Barnsley, where he made over 300 appearances.

After retiring as a player following over 1,000 appearances, he went on to become a coach at a variety of clubs, including York, Leeds, Rotherham and Newcastle United U23s, as well as in the women's game.
