Latics head to a stuttering Chesterfield side tomorrow
Latics have been handed a boost ahead of tomorrow's National League trip to Chesterfield with the news that Will Sutton has signed a contract extension until the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
The 20-year-old joined the Latics youth team in 2018, and signed a professional deal after completing his scholarship in 2021.
“I'm extremely pleased to have extended my stay at the club for another few years," Sutton said.
“I’ve been here since I was 16, I’ve grown a lot and feel right at home here.
“It’s been on my mind over the past few months that my contract was up at the end of the season, so to get this all signed off is a great feeling.
“I can’t wait to see how myself and the club progress over the next few years.”
Sutton made his Latics debut in the EFL Trophy back in 2020, playing the full 90 minutes as Oldham beat Bradford 3-1.
He made his league debut on the last day of that season, coming on for the last 20 minutes against Forest Green Rovers.
Having impressed during his time out on loan with Witton Albion and Farsley Celtic, Sutton was rewarded with a run of games in the first-team towards the end of last season, scoring goals against Walsall and Sutton in March.
Having picked up an injury during pre-season this year, the youngster returned to action against Dorking, and has been ever present since starting against Dagenham and Redbridge.
A central defender by trade, he has shown great maturity in recent matches at right back and scored his third goal for the club against Gateshead on Tuesday.
Latics could do with a fillip tomorrow as Tuesday's game in the North East ended 2-1 to the hosts.
That dragged Latics back to just three points clear of the drop zone.
Paul Cook's Chesterfield are currently fourth in the table, having suffered a major blip in form of late.
They are without a win in seven games, and have picked up just three points from the last 21 available.
