Latics eye further Trophy progress

Two improving sides will go head-to-head when Latics meet Gateshead in the FA Trophy at Boundary Park tomorrow - weather permitting.

A pitch inspection is to take place early tomorrow morning (Saturday) ahead of the fourth round tie, which was switched to Boundary Park after floodlight issues up in Gateshead.

Gateshead are currently just a place and two points worse off than David Unsworth's Latics in the National League standings.

However, like Latics, they have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes on the field in recent weeks.

Gateshead are unbeaten in four matches, one of which was a 5-1 thumping of Gloucester in the Trophy third round.

Latics have lost just once - at league leaders Notts County - in their last five matches as they have pulled away from the National League relegation zone.

Latics and Gateshead haven't met in the league for 63 years, but Dino Maamria's team triumphed 2-1 at Gateshead in the FA Cup in November, 2019.

Latics boss Unsworth said: "We want that consistency, that's the word I'm looking for next, get that consistent performance and we'll be happier."

Meanwhile, Latics youngster Joe Edwards has joined Mossley on loan.

The 18-year-old will join David Fish’s side on a one-month loan.

Edwards, an attacking midfielder, played for Greater Manchester Schoolboys prior to joining Latics, and signed a professional deal at the start of the season.

Although he’s yet to make his competitive debut for Latics, he did feature in a number of pre-season games, and has regularly made the bench.

Fellow prospect Jordan Windass has joined Buxton on loan for a month.

The 23-year-old joined Latics from Bradford PA in the summer, and made his debut as a substitute against Southend in August.

Buxton won promotion to the National League North last season after winning the Northern Premier League Premier Division title, and currently sit 20th in the table.
