Late, late goal condemns Latics to another defeat

Date published: 07 December 2022

Latics remain anchored in the National League drop zone after losing to a late goal at Boreham Wood last night (Tuesday).

Lee Ndlovu bagged the winner in stoppage time at Meadow Park.

David Unsworth's struggling side have now drawn one and lost five of their last six matches, and have taken just six points from a possible 33, as they remain second from bottom of the table.

Ben Tollitt thought he had salvaged a draw for Latics with seven minutes remaining when he smashed home Hallam Hope's cross to cancel out Ndlovu's clever flicked opener on the hour.

However, in the third minute of five added on, Ndlovu's quick feet allowed him to control George Broadbent's cross and tuck home a shot into the bottom corner.

Unsworth didn't emerge for post-match media duties.

Instead, his assistant John Ebbrell reflected on another hugely disappoining reverse.

Ebbrell said: "The players put a hell of a lot of effort in, and we're disappointed for them, and the fans of course.

"That's the ones who were here, and those at home - they're suffering a bit at the moment, like we all are.

"Boreham Wood were always a threat once they were down at our end of the pitch, and unfortunately it's a bitter pill to swalow to lose to pretty much the last kick of the game.

"Across the board I think we look like a team that's coming together, and someone's going to get it soon - they've got to - but we understand the importance of every game so we've now got no alternative other than to move on to Sunday and be ready for our next game.

"We know each game becomes more pressurised, but we're up for it and we'll be fine."

Latics return to action on Sunday when they host Torquay United.
