Oldham Athletic appoint Paul Scholes as manager

Scholes the new boss at Latics

The former Manchester United and England midfielder, widely regarded as one of the finest players in the modern era, has put pen to paper on a one-and-a-half-year deal at Boundary Park.

His appointment had been in doubt until recently when an English Football League hearing cleared him to take the job despite him being a minority owner of Salford City in the National League, along with the other members of the famous ‘Class of ‘92’.

It’ll mark the 44-year old’s first step into management having spent his entire playing career at Old Trafford, appearing in 718 games for the club including winning every major honour on offer.

He was also capped 66 times by his country.

Scholes comes into the club following the sacking of Frankie Bunn back in December after Latics were thumped 6-0 at Carlisle United.

Since then interim academy coach Pete Wild has been in caretaker charge.

Now Oldham lad Scholes comes into the club following stints as a TV pundit with ITV and BT Sport.

He will be assisted at Boundary Park by former Latics coach Mick Priest.

Scholes had been interested in taking charge at Oldham Athletic for some time, he was one of the names linked with the job when Richie Wellens was sacked at the end of last season, prior to Frankie Bunn being appointed.

Speaking about the appointment, Oldham Athletic owner, Abdallah Lemsagam said: “Paul has won everything there is to win in football.”
