Doncaster next up for Athletic

Date published: 08 January 2019

Athletic’s reward for providing one of the major shocks of the third round of this season’s FA Cup is a fourth round trip to League One Doncaster Rovers.

Following Sunday's breath-taking 2-1 win at Premier League Fulham, the tie will continue Athletic's run of always being away from home in this season’s competition.

They travelled to Hampton and Richmond Borough in the first round before heading to Maidstone United in the second round, and then on to the banks of the Thames at the weekend.

The draw for the fourth round brings together two teams who know quite a bit about each other then it comes to the FA Cup.

Athletic and Doncaster have met five times in the history of the competition, with a meeting at Boundary Park marking the last time back in November 2016, a tie which Oldham won 2-1.

Now they’ll meet again at the Keepmoat Stadium later in January for a place in the fifth round, moving ever closer to the Wembley Stadium final in May.

Athletic’s trip to Doncaster will take place over the weekend of January 25-28, with the winners receiving £180,000 in prize money.

Meanwhile, Athletic’s fantastic week could be about to finish on a high for one of their players, with striker Chris O’Grady (above) being nominated for League Two’s December Player of the Month.

The 32-year old made seven appearances for the club during the festive month and bagged himself seven goals in the process.

His tally included a hat-trick at home to Bury in the middle of December during their 4-2 win.

O’Grady faces stiff opposition to take home the prize with Lincoln City’s John Akinde also up for it.

The target man contributed four goals and an assist in the league for the Imps.

Also on the nomination list is Danny Grainger from Carlisle United, who scored against Athletic in their 6-0 hammering on Boxing Day.

The defender also chipped in for two clean sheets, three goals and an assist during December.

Finally, George Williams from Forest Green Rovers scored five goals in four games, including a hat-trick at Newport County to bag his name on the list of possible winners.

The winner is expected to be announced later in the week.
