Fans having plenty to say on Bunn sacking

Date published: 28 December 2018

There has been a mixed reaction to the news of manager Frankie Bunn’s sacking by Athletic after barely six months.

Ex-players and Athletic fans old and young have had their say on social media after Bunn (56) was shown the Boundary Park door by controversial owner Abdallah Lemsagam yesterday following his record of 12 wins, 11 losses and eight draws during his 31 games at the helm.

Some clearly have lots of sympathy for Athletic playing star Bunn at the end of his doomed first stab at management, while others felt he should have been fired earlier.

Prior to his appointment, Bunn had coached at several clubs but had never taken charge of a team in the English Football League.

After the 6-0 thumping at Carlisle on Boxing Day, Athletic currently sit in 12th place in League Two, their first campaign at fourth tier level since the early 1970s.

Former Athletic striker and club legend Ian Marshall Tweeted: “Very sad to hear Frankie Bunn has been sacked.

“I love that club and think the supporters are superb and deserve a lot better chairman - doesn’t have a clue!!!”

"It's almost like someone playing on a Playstation,” Marshall added in a radio interview earlier today.

Jimbo Simpson Tweeted: “Sacking Bunn is actually against our club motto of keep the faith.

“He had shown enough in his tenure to merit faith being shown.”

Nimish Patel added: “The owner has a lot to explain, not sure who #OAFC would attract right now.”

Steve Shipman Tweeted: “Results weren’t fantastic let’s be honest, but before Carlisle it did look like we’d turned a bit of a corner.

“To sack him after six months and not give him a transfer window is, quite frankly, unreasonable and stupid.”

Leo said: “As bad as yesterday was I wouldn't have sacked Bunn.

“It doesn't work keep sacking managers!

“Never a dull moment at Latics. Dread to think who will take over next.”

Ric Metty is one Athletic fan who is glad to see the departure of Bunn.

He Tweeted: “I'm delighted FB has been sacked.

“I don't think we are too big for the division, but I have expectations and they simply weren't being met.”

Callum Hulme added: “Completely unsurprised the manager's been sacked, should've been looking at instant promotion after relegation last season, club's in a right state.”

Finally for now, Alex Milo summed up what a huge number of Athletic fans appear to be echoing at present, stating on Facebook: “Absolute joke of a decision, the club is in turmoil.”

On the pitch, Athletic next face Port Vale in League Two tomorrow, before taking on bottom club Notts County on New Year's Day.
