Edmundson pens contract extension

Athletic defender George Edmundson has signed a two-year contract extension with the club.

The 21-year-old, who joined Athletic aged 15 as a youth team scholar, has started every game so far this season.

He made his first team debut in 2015 and has since played 28 times for the club.

Edmundson enjoyed loan spells at Alfreton Town and AFC Fylde before breaking into the first team towards the end of the 2017/18 season.

Speaking about his new deal, Edmundson said: “I’m delighted to be here for another two years and hopefully I can make a big impact.

“I’ve played the first three games this season and I feel like I’ve done well, but I’m still only young and I need to keep learning and improving.

“To come through the youth team here and to be in the first team is a big thing for me.”

Manager Frankie Bunn said: “It’s a good reward for an up-and-coming player with potential, he’s been excellent since we’ve been here.

“His enthusiasm, dedication and playing ability has warranted this new deal.

“For other youngsters at the club they can aspire to what George has done, he has worked hard to do it.

“I have told him he can’t rest on his laurels, he’s not the finished article yet and there is more to come.”

The defender’s new contract runs until the end of the 2019/20 season.
