Athletic's Johan Branger-Engone went close early on
Athletic were dumped out of the Carabao Cup competition at the first hurdle by an impressive Derby County side.
A goal in either half condemned Frankie Bunn's team to defeat on a night which started off with the official unveiling of the newly-renamed Joe Royle stand.
Athletic went close early on when Johan Branger-Engone fired in a shot from distance that whistled narrowly past the post.
A similar effort at the other end saw the Rams' Florian Jofefzoon go close, before Jack Marriott was also denied from close range as Derby pressed.
Frank Lampard's side struck after 36 minutes.
Athletic defender Sam Graham scored an own-goal, unluckily deflecting Harry Wilson's wicked delivery into his own net while under pressure from Fikayo Tomori.
Another Chelsea loanee - Mason Mount - made it 2-0 for Derby courtesy of a fine turn a sweet finish from 20 yards.
Athletic 'keeper Daniel Iversen was kept busy late on as the Rams pressed for a third goal.
Iversen saved superbly from Marriott and Bradley Johnson.
Branger had a great chance for Athletic as his shot was superbly tipped round the post by Scott Carson, while sub Jose Baxter thumped a shot against the crossbar in the 79th minute.
