North End prove too strong for Athletic

Athletic closed their pre-season friendly campaign with a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Championship outfit Preston.

It was the hosts' first defeat during a generally impressive summer programme, so little wonder Athletic boss Frankie Bunn remained positive when speaking after the game.

Bunn said: “I’ve got some devastated players in the changing room and that’s the right thing.

"We’re learning about them, they’re learning about us and no-one likes losing.

“But there were so many positives in that first-half performance.

“The foundations are there and the first half reflected everything that we are going to be.

“Maybe we need that bit of gold dust and guile in the attacking third.”

Second-half goals from substitutes Louis Moult, Daryl Horgan and Paul Gallagher proved the difference between the two teams, while boss Bunn was clearly pleased with several elements of his side’s play, particularly in the first 45 minutes.

The hosts had much the better of the opening half, but Preston boss Alex Neil mixed things up with a host of substitutions at the break and saw his side improve greatly in the second period

Moult tapped home at the back post five minutes into the second period before Horgan doubled the advantage in spectacular style with a long-range effort.

Gallagher made it three, slamming in a rebound after Daniel Iversen had saved his initial penalty kick attempt.

Boundary Park will host an open training session on Tuesday ahead of the new season, with gates opening in the North Stand at 10am ahead of training starting at 10.30am.

The manager is hoping to see as many fans as possible there on the day.

“The more the merrier!” Bunn said.

“I’d say to everyone, make sure you get down.”
