Fan restrained after charging onto the pitch during Dale-Athletic stalemate

Athletic remain a point clear of the Sky Bet League One relegation zone after securing a goalless draw at closest drop rivals Rochdale last night.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium throughout a tense 90 minutes, with by far the main drama coming during the first half when a fan had to be restrained by players after coming on to the pitch to remonstrate with the referee.

The supporter charged towards official Peter Bankes after he awarded a penalty to Dale, before being led away by Athletic skipper Anthony Gerrard and stewards.

Athletic 'keeper Johny Placide then saved Joe Rafferty's spot-kick after Gerrard brought down Joe Thompson in the box.

"I saw the end of it. I saw someone slip into Gerrard," said Oldham boss Richie Wellens.

"If he's a fan running on the pitch he's picking on the wrong lad in Gerrard because I've seen him box.

"For any fan to come onto the pitch is not right. There are loads of fans here who were brilliant and behaved."

Dale had a goal ruled out in the second half when Calvin Andrew was deemed to have fouled Placide while putting the ball in the net.

Athletic created their best chance with virtually the last kick of the game as Aaron-Amadi Holloway and Eoin Doyle linked up, but the Irishman saw his volley sail over the bar.

Athletic take on AFC Wimbledon this Saturday before facing Southend at home in what could be a season defining week for the club and their survival hopes.

The result leaves Rochdale 21st in the table, one point from safety, with Athletic just above them in 20th.
