Eoin Doyle inspired Latics to victory

Despite having a man sent off, Oldham secured victory over Peterborough with a late goal that sees them move off the bottom of League One.

Following John Sheridan's departure earlier this week, interim manager Richie Wellens gave goalkeeper Johny Placide his debut whilst Eoin Doyle returned to the side following his suspension.

Doyle gave Latics the lead before Brian Wilson was dismissed and Marcus Maddison scored from the resulting penalty to equalise. Dan Gardner and a second from Doyle put Latics 3-1 ahead but Jack Marriott pulled a goal back in added time, but Latics held on to secure a vital win.

Oldham give as good as they got in a goalless first half, the defence keeping Jack Marriott, league’s top goalscorer, quiet.

Junior Morias was stretched off with a leg injury midway through the half, and was replaced by Idris Kanu.

Peterborough came close to opening the scoring early in the second half when Marriot hit the post but it was Doyle who gave Oldham the lead after Peterborough goalkeeper, Jonathan Bond, could only parry Jack Byrne's powerful shot into his path.

Peterborough's equaliser came from the penalty spot after Marcus Maddison was upended by Brian Wilson. Maddison was fortunate his penalty went in off the bar and Oldham were down to ten men with Wilson shown a red card.

Latics were fortunate not to go behind when Ricky Miller’s initial shot was saved by Placide, and Maddison’s follow up was excellently saved by the goalkeeper.

Oldham took the lead again with ten minutes to play, Dan Gardner scoring after being unselfishly played in by Doyle.

With minutes left to play it appeared to be all over when Oldham added a third, Doyle on the end of an Abdelhakim Omrani cross, but Peterborough refused to give up and set up a siege in the Oldham half.

The pressure paid two minutes into the eight minutes of added time when Jack Marriott scored for Peterborough, but it was too little, too late as Oldham defended valiantly to take three much needed points.
