Little heroes shine for their school

A DEDICATED bunch of pupils at Littlemoor Primary work extra hard to make sure their school is a safe and pleasant place for all.

And the hard work of the youngsters who run the Pupil Voice Centre has earned them a Pride in Oldham nomination.

The group transformed an unused computer room into the base for the school council — which is made up of Pupil Voice, Pupil Mentor and Eco School — and the anti-bullying council.

Struggling

Members of the school council organised a series of fund-raising events, including bag packs at Tesco and henna painting, so they could buy furniture for the room and make it their own.

Pupil Voice members promote the work of the school council, Eco School members concentrate on environmental issues and Pupil Mentor members look after youngsters who are struggling with school life.

Members of the school council are trusted by staff to take time out from lessons if they are needed elsewhere.

The anti-bullying council deals with pupils who feel they are being targeted and the young members hold meetings with the victim and the perpetrator to see if they can solve the problem.

The walls of the Pupil Voice Centre are adorned with interactive displays made by pupils as well as the school council’s motto “SHINE”.

Teacher Laura Pilley, who helps pupils to run the Pupil Voice Centre, nominated members for the award. She said: “The Pupil Voice Centre is entirely representative of our cross-section of children.

“Littlemoor children hail from an area of social deprivation and our children are often given very little at home in terms of responsibility and influence.

“The centre is very important to them to feel needed in school and to ensure that every child in school feels they have a voice and an opinion that counts. The children deserve more credit than I am able to give them in school and winning a Pride in Oldham Award would give them the praise and recognition they should get.

“It would be the cherry on the cake.”
