NOMINATED with pride . . . some of the haematology staff from F11 ward
A HARDY bunch of haematologists has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award - for treating patients with respect and dignity.
Patient Angela Gibbons said staff on F11 ward at the Royal Oldham Hospital deserved recognition for making what can be an awful experience more manageable.
Angela, from Royton, started treatment in March and has since had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She is still having treatment and will need regular check-ups.
She said: “When someone is going through something like this it can be very daunting and you don’t know what to expect. Staff on the ward make you feel you are the only one there and that you are important.
“I know it is their job to do what they do, but they go above and beyond to make everyone feel at ease. Nothing is too much trouble.
“When I first started going, I always took someone with me but after a few times I felt comfortable enough to go on my own. I feel very lucky I was able to have such a great standard of care in my home town.”
The Royal Oldham Hospital unit treats anyone with a blood disorder and typically sees up to 30 patients a day.
Staff nurse Sheila Munt said: “We are all shocked we have been nominated, but delighted that Angela was happy with the treatment. People who have treatment here tend to come on a regular basis, so they become close friends.”
