It’s my time to give back, says Jean

A woman who dedicates her time teaching Oldhamers how to dance has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham.

Jean Griffiths, of Royton, runs her academy of dance at St Anne’s School, where she teaches, tap, modern and ballet to children and adults aged three and over.

She was nominated by Sue MacDonald, who praised Jean’s dedication to her work and the effect she has on her students.

Sue said: “Jean is an Oldham born woman who has devoted her life to performing and teaching dance to children and adults. “My grand-daughter attends classes twice a week and has benefited so much from Jean’s teaching skills. It’s wonderful to go and watch the children and seeing how they progress each week.

“Jean’s a credit to Oldham and should be rewarded for her dedication.”

Jean has worked in the dance industry for 24 years - including a perido in South Africa, where she emigrated in the Eighties. She started another local school when she returned to Oldham in 1999

Jean said: “I’m taken aback by it. It was so unexpected, but I’m obviously delighted at the same time.

“I was taught in Oldham by Marianne Jepson, so I feel her legacy is continuing. I’ve worked with a lot of different children and it’s very rewarding. I feel like it’s my time to give back.”
