A MOTHER whose quick-thinking actions saved the life of an elderly cyclist after a suspected crash in Chadderton is beaming with pride.

For Jade Whittle (22) has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award in relation to the frightening incident in August.

The mother-of-one was with her five-month old son and her cousin when they saw Bill Bicknell (79) fall off his bike in Chadderton Hall Road.

It was suspected he suffered a heart attack after being clipped by an overtaking car, so Jade rushed into action and found that Bill had no pulse.

Jade, who works for a builders’ merchant, said: “It was such a frightening ordeal and I had no first-aid training whatsoever, but I tried to stay calm and follow the instructions by the paramedic on the phone.”

Jade, of Burnley Lane, Chadderton, was doing so well that when paramedics arrived they asked her to keep up with her first-aid attempts.

Currently awaiting a heart bypass and still ill from the incident almost two months on, Bill and his family are convinced Jade’s actions “kept him going”.

Jade said: “I still keep in touch with Bill’s wife and his family to see how he is doing - but I’m so pleased my actions helped to save.

“I am lost for words to be nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.”
