Yasmin Jolly: “I love being busy”
A STAR pupil from Oldham who made great efforts to help others has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham Award.
Not only did Yasmin Jolly scoop an A* and and 2 A grades in her A-levels this year, she’s also put in limitless effort to help the local community.
The 18-year-old former Radclyffe pupil studied for her A-levels at Oldham Hulme Grammar sixth-form. While she was there she juggled homework with volunteering on the reception at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.
She also helped out at Tameside Hospital, was a mentor to younger children at her school and gave up her time to help out at tots and youngsters during sessions at the Werneth Study Centre. Yasmin was an integral helper at borough events including the Oldham Festival of Diversity and Werneth Park Fair and has this year been awarded the Rotary Young Person of the Year award. She was also a member of the Oldham Youth Council.
Hulme deputy principal John Budding noticed her potential and nominated Yasmin, who has now gone on to study medicine at Liverpool University.
He said: “What is so special about her is that she is so unassuming and in no way big-headed. She’s really keen on social diversity and she manages her time fantastically. She’s an unbelievable example for young Asian women — she’s not only benefited her own community greatly but that has reached across to another country. She’ll make a fantastic doctor.”
Indeed, her efforts paid off outside the UK as she raised over £400 for charity work in Romania and flew to the country to visit the orphanages the money would help support.
Yasmin, from Coppice, said: “I started volunteering after my GCSEs because I had nothing to do in the summer.
“I did it because I wanted to help out the community and I love it — I never thought I would be up for awards. I’m really flattered and pleased. I love being busy, I can’t just sit and do nothing in front of the television.”
