GEEK TREAT . . . Love Where You Live winner Andy Powell, of Hack Oldham with presenter Councillor Abdul Jabbar.
ANDY Powell, founder of the Hack Oldham group of designers, craftspeople, technology and IT enthusiasts, received the Love Where You Live award.
He strongly believes in the benefits of learning new skills and making things, whether for hobbies, to meet new friends or for business.
He founded Hack Oldham in an old joiner's workshop on Hardcastle Street. Following its growth, the group is moving to Oldham's new digital enterprise centre on Yorkshire Street in early 2017.
Andy received his award from Councillor Abdul Jabbar, Deputy Leader of Oldham Council and cabinet member for finance.
Andy said: "Receiving this award is great. It's really nice to get this recognition for what we are trying to achieve.
"The move to Yorkshire Street will make a big difference because Hack Oldham will be far-more visible. Passers-by will get a much better understanding of the range of things we do. "
Councillor Jabbar said: "Andy has taken it upon himself to nurture local talent. He's put his energy and passion into making something great for the people of Oldham.
"Our borough's progress should never just be measured by new buildings like the Old Town Hall cinema. It should also be measured by recognising that we have some of the most creative, innovative and talented people.
"Hack Oldham and its members have supported local businesses, helped people with social media, helped to prototype new product development and inspired many people. New businesses have started there and Hack Oldham is now set to join the digital hub on Yorkshire Street.
Andy may self-mockingly call himself a 'geek', but he is far more than that. He loves where he lives and has put much back into Oldham."
