A LONG-STANDING school governor who has served the children and families of her community for more than 40 years was nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

Marlene Armitage, of Broadway, Chadderton has served as school governor of Parish Church Junior School since the 1970s and has recently ensured it successfully amalgamated with St Stephens to become a new school Holy Cross C.E. Primary School.

Her services to the community were recognised by the Queen when she was awarded Maundy money and she also served as a magistrate for 31 years, during which time she was appointed to the Greater Manchester Courts Committee for six years.

Paul Wardle, head teacher at Holy Cross C.E. Primary School, nominated Marlene for the award.

He said: "She has dedicated herself to this particular area of Oldham for 40 years.

"The way she has served this area is exemplary. She always has the children and the families at heart. She has been an active governor for a very long time.

He added: "She is integral to the school really and she is also integral to the area. She just sees herself as part of this family and doesn't see herself above anybody else, she does everything she can to help."

Although shocked, Marlene was pleased to receive the nomination.

She said: "I found it astounding to be nominated. It is a nice thing to happen.

"I have been a governor for 42 years and I have enjoyed every minute of it and it has been a really good thing to do."

Marlene added: "Paul is the most fantastic head that I have worked with."
