Forward As One announces new teacher training partnership

Date published: 27 March 2023

Trainee teachers across Greater Manchester are to benefit from a brand new training programme, drawing on the latest evidence of what makes teaching effective in raising pupil achievement.

Forward As One Church of England Multi Academy Trust runs 12 primary schools - including St James' C of E Primary and St John's C of E Primary Schools in Oldham - and has already been involved in training over 350 new teachers through the Schools Direct Programme, in partnership with Vantage Multi Academy Trust.

Forward As One already delivers the Early Career Framework and suite of National Professional Qualifications to over 800 colleagues across Greater Manchester.

To build on this success, the trust, founded from St Paul's Church of England Primary School in Bolton, will now partner with national education charity Ambition Institute to deliver its own training new teachers across the trust.

Ambition Institute’s new teacher training programme extends their provision of high quality professional development for existing teachers and school leaders, which is reaching more than 45,000 educators this year.

Elliot Costas-Walker, Director of Learning and Partnerships at Forward as One, said: “We’re committed to developing the next generation of teachers so that pupils and their families can experience a great education, given by people who are truly invested in their community.

"We’re now partnering with Ambition so that new teachers across the region get high quality training where they can build the expertise and experience they need to flourish.

"Recruiting and keeping teachers in schools is a huge challenge and we want to break this cycle by giving people who want to teach the very best foundations for their career.”

Evidence shows that high quality professional development for teachers has a significant effect on pupils’ learning outcomes.

However, one in three teachers leave the classroom in their first five years.

To address this, the Department for Education has overhauled its training provision for teachers, introducing a new teacher training framework in 2019, a two-year induction for teachers early in their careers, and increasing investment in career-long professional development.

Hilary Spencer, Chief Executive Officer at Ambition Institute, said: “A great teacher changes the future every day.

"Especially for children who have had a tough start in life, a teacher can be the critical factor in their success.

"That is why we believe every teacher should have access to high quality professional development from the very outset of their career.

"Forward as One does fantastic work with schools across Greater Manchester, and we're looking forward to building on our partnership so that every teacher in the region can get high quality support.”
