Pupils learn the importance of staying safe on the roads

Oldham Council officials visited Alexandra Park primary school during Road Safety Week.

The officers spoke about the importance of being safe on the road during school assemblies.

Road Safety Week has an aim to inspire thousands of schools, organisations and communities to act on road safety.

It also provides a focal point for professionals working in road safety to boost awareness and engagement in their work.

Workshops were held at the school to help students understand road safety.

Year 3 pupils also enjoyed a workshop on how to be safe around the roads.

Year 5 pupils took part in a walking workshop where they were shown how to cross roads safely when circumstances are not ideal, while Year 6 were given advice on walking to and from school safely.

School staff are hoping that the students have taken note of the assemblies and feel that the children’s safety is a priority.

PSHE coordinator Samantha Nicholson-Hickling said: “The week was a fantastic success.

"We’ve followed up our assemblies with in-class activities and really focused on how to keep children safe.

"It’s important they learn these skills when they are young so they can keep themselves safe through life.”

Road Safety Week is funded by the Department for Transport and commercial sponsors.
