Rotary Club of Oldham present Community Service Shield to Latics saviour Frank

Date published: 08 July 2024

The Rotary Club of Oldham presented Latics co-owner/chairman Frank Rothwell with its annual Community Service Award.

This recognised not only the saving of Oldham Athletic but the new emphasis through the Rothwell family for a thriving community-based project which will benefit the whole of Oldham.

The shield was first presented in 2000 to, ironically, Oldham Athletic in recognition of all their work in the community, especially in developing the skills and enthusiasm of young people at that time.

This was followed annually by worthy individuals and enterprises who had shown exceptional service to the town and its people.

At its evening meeting the club welcomed Frank and his wife Judith and enjoyed listening to Frank talk about his epic endeavours on the water, not only on the Atlantic but across the world.

The shield was presented to Frank and then Club President Bernard Stone was joined by representatives of Chadderton and Failsworth Rotary Club and also Crompton and Royton Rotary Club, who presented cheques totalling £1,500 for Frank’s chosen charity, Alzheimers Research UK.
