Oldham Mountain Rescue Team has paid tribute to a well loved 80 year old man who died last year and whose family donated funds to the organisation in his memory.

Ken Taylor, from Dobcross, was known to some of the team through Rimmon Climbing Club and other nearby connections.

In lieu of flowers, Ken’s friends and family decided to donate funds to the team, with a grand total of £500 raised.

While the team always hope to receive funds under happier circumstances, it is thankful for the very generous donation received.

Ken’s widow Glenise said: “Ken was born in Dobcross in April 1941.

"When he was about six-years-old, and his brother Ogden was about 11 years old, their parents Annie and Ogden kept the Waggon public house in Uppermill.

"He attended Dobcross Primary School, Hulme Grammar School and Huddersfield Technical College."

Ken's first job was at Mallalieu’s in Delph, a woollen and textiles mill.

He went on to be a designer in Fire Escapes, and Fire Protection Equipment and at one point had his own business in this field.

He loved New Orleans Jazz, and was social secretary for the local Jazz Club.

He was a member of the Rimmon Climbing Club, and climbed across the UK and Europe, including climbing the Matterhorn in Switzerland.

He met his wife Di, who was also a climber, and they had three children.

In later years he owned wartime military vehicles and was a Second World War reenactor where, through their mutual hobby, he met his second wife Glenise.

They attended many wartime weekends and events throughout the country, including the Yanks Wartime Weekend in Uppermill.

Glenise added: “Sadly, Ken passed away last November 2021.

"He had a wonderful “send off” with his wartime military vehicle friends providing a convoy and many friends dressed in wartime uniform and dress.

“The wake was held at Saddleworth Rangers Rugby Club, Greenfield, where his dad Ogden had played in the team in the 1930s and 40s, and members of his family also played and coached for the team over the years.
