Budding entrepreneurs shine in Dragon's Den challenge.

Date published: 15 December 2020

Pupils hoping to follow in the footsteps of business giants like Deboroah Meaden and Peter Jones have been showcasing their skills at Alexandra Park Junior School.

This week is the school's Enterprise Challenge Week in which students must develop a business idea, plan the sales, and calculate their profit.

The mini "companies" usually make products for the school's Christmas fair, but this year, the event has fallen victim to the Coronavirus restrictions.

However, the young entrepreneurs still presented their ideas to the school "dragons" who had to decide which product would be this year's overall winner.

The entries were as follows:

Year 3 baked scones, inspired by their Victorian history topic as well as their love for chocolate.

Year 4 created ethical fair trade bath bombs with a catchy company name of "Bubbilicious" and a seriously clear slogan "Soak your stresses away".

Year 5 were inspired by their geography work and made Mountain Climbers Flapjacks "the perfect high energy snack for any mountain climber".

Year 6 took everyone back to the old time arcade with their buzzer games, created using their electricity Science skills.

Some of the entries pitched to the school "dragons"

The dragons were Mrs Liddy (School business manager) alongside a special guest from Create Oldham - Robert Cragg (Current board chairman).

The children had to pitch their products and show of their skills in Maths and English, proving that their product could be profitable.

Mr. Cragg said "It's been great to be involved in this enterprise project. The chldren had clearly thought not just about what to make but why they were making it. I'd love to be involved again hopefully in school next time. The winning product really thought about what made a good product and included some excellent market research."

Mrs Nicholson-Hickling PSHE leader / assembly co-ordinator said "Dragon's Den is an important part of our calendar. We were unsure how we would pull it off without the Christmas Fair, but our children are resilient and we knew we couldn't let them down.

"Running our pitches and presentations on Microsoft Teams as a challenge, however it was one that was worth overcoming.

"Our children were fantastic and really showed some early business acumen. These types of projects all our children to shine and provide real world knowledge they can take forward. We hope we can be back to normal next year and have our Christmas fair which will really put our little Enterprise challenge back on track!"
