Rotary Club pressing on with local and international support

Date published: 17 June 2020

Despite the recent lockdown, Oldham Metro Rotary Club has been active in the community both practically - using contacts and networking to link various organisations, companies and clubs where a need has been identified - and financially, in assisting or offsetting the impact coronavirus is having on others.

OMRC has donated £500 to the Impact Community Church of Hollinwood towards their homeless accommodation and outreach project.

This money will be used to buy food, cleaning materials and other items needed in their work.

The Threshold/Jigsaw Family Help Unit was provided with 20 £10 vouchers to be used at Asda Stores.

OMRC also donated an Easter Egg for each child in their care.

Rainbow Trust, who support families who have a critically sick or terminally ill child, were handed a donation of £500 in support of this very worthwhile cause.

Dovestones WI, meanwhile, formed a sewing group to make scrubs and wash bags for local NHS hospitals.

OMRC donated £400 to allow material to be bought and batches of 3D printed face masks, manufactured locally at cost.

OMRC also introduced the WI to a local rope and cord company who donated 2,000 drawcords for the wash bags.

OMRC volunteers also learned that Emmaus of Mossley donated their stock of bedsheets towards this important work for the NHS.

To a sewing group set up in Rochdale making PPE items and scrubs, OMRC donated £400.

Currently OMRC are working with Oldham Young Carers to provide help, support and materiel for the wellbeing of young people who find themselves alone and indoors due to lockdown.

OMRC has several international projects on the go at present also.

It's supporting a church community in Uganda and has donated £500 towards food rations needed urgently due to Covid 19.

OMRC's main international effort is via Lend With Care, however.

This allows the Rotary Club to support people or groups who want to start a small business or enterprise.

Presently OMRC is supporting 17 entrepreneurs in 12 countries with very modest loans which they pay back on a monthly basis.
