Oldham Council is inviting residents to take part in the free Heritage Open Days event – which promises to be bigger and better than ever.

From war stories to discovering Oldham’s ancient medieval routes, there’s plenty to experience.

Whether you’re interested in architecture or just curious about history this is your opportunity to find out more about the heritage around you.

This year’s event runs from September 6 to October 6.

Highlights include:

•           Oldham World War One walk

•           The Changing Face of Business in Oldham

•           The Seven Holy Crosses of Oldham

•           A tour of Castleshaw’s Roman Forts, Delph

•           World War One graves, Greenacres Cemetery

•           Dong our church bell, St Matthew and St Luke, Chadderton

•           Royton soldiers at the end of the First World War, Royton Library

Councillor Paul Jean Jacques, Cabinet Member for Education and Culture, said: “There is so much history on our doorstep and this excellent programme of events gives residents the opportunity to learn about the rich heritage of our borough.

“As we embark on our journey to integrate our health and social care services, the exhibition “Health in Oldham before the NHS” is an interesting way to look back at Oldham’s health provision before the NHS and see how much has been achieved.

“We’re also inviting residents to take a look at Oldham’s architectural gems with tours of buildings such as Oldham Parish Church, Oldham Lyceum and The Mayor’s Parlour.

“I’d encourage everyone to take advantage of these events and get an insight into the history that has shaped our town.”
