Cyclists are gearing up to witness the beauty of the North West while raising funds for charity in this year’s Pedal to the Pier.

On September 15, cyclists looking for an off-road challenge will come together in a 100km ride from Manchester to Blackpool.

Beginning at Salford Sports Village, participants will follow the river, parting from it to only enjoy traffic-free cycle paths through the Irwell Sculpture Trail and stunning country parks.

The Fylde coast forms the final stretch of the route, culminating at the Blackpool Tower Festival Headland for a well-deserved fish and chips on the pier.

Those preferring to take on a 50km ride will finish their journey in Cuerden Valley Park, Lancashire’s premier country park perfect for a brew with a view.

Previous participant Jon loved the experience.

He said: “Pedal to the Pier is such an exhilarating challenge for off-road bikers.

"The combination of urban and rural landscapes is truly captivating and the route really showcases the beauty of the North West.”

This challenge is not only about the views, however.

Those taking part will be fundraising for Mencap, a charity devoted to ensuring that people with a learning disability are valued equally.

They support thousands of people through their network of over 400 local groups, with services ranging from advice about employment to 24/7 care.

For the 1.4 million people - 118,500 of which are children - in the UK currently with a learning disability, their work is invaluable.

To register, head to: mencap.org.uk/event/pedal-pier-2018.

Enrolment costs £30, which includes a marshalled route and PDF map, mechanical support throughout, training guides and fundraising support, and a medal to mark the achievement.
