Get involved in Volunteers' Week
Date published: 31 May 2018
Volunteers’ Week starts tomorrow (Friday)
Action Together is inviting residents of Oldham and Tameside to come and meet local charities to try their hand at some volunteer taster sessions to mark Volunteers’ Week, which runs from June 1-7.
Action Together aims to create stronger communities in Oldham and Tameside and as part of Volunteers’ Week the charity is hosting two town centre events to raise the profile of local volunteering opportunities.
Saturday 2 June, 10am – 3pm, Market Street, Ashton-under-Lyne market
Wednesday 6 June, 10am – 3pm, Albion Street, Oldham
Whether residents are looking to connect with their local community, share a skill or meet new people, there will be lots of activities throughout the day to give people a taste of what’s involved as a volunteer.
Visitors could try some campaigning with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue, repair a bike with Positive Cycles Oldham or have a go at football coaching with Stalybridge Celtic.
There will be something for everyone.
David Sharples, Active Communities Manager at Action Together, said: “Oldham and Tameside boast an army of over 70,000 volunteers and Action Together is proud to support and celebrate the fantastic contribution they make every day to support our local communities.
"We hope you join us at one of our events, and that we may just spark some inspiration for those looking to make a difference locally whilst having fun at the same time!”
Volunteers are central to the work of countless charities and other organisations.
They are a valuable presence in many communities, making a difference in places as diverse as sports clubs, libraries, schools and hospitals.
Hundreds of events will be taking place across the country to mark Volunteers' Week.
The annual campaign, which was established in 1984, recognises the contribution volunteers make to our communities every day.
