Mayor's fund-raising drive receives another boost

In welcoming Cllr Shadab Qumer to the Holdcroft Group Fleet dealership to hand over keys to two more new cars, the Mayor of Oldham's fund-raising efforts received another boost.

Mr Barnes collected his Mazda from Chris Dalton and David Syddall, Mazda brand manager, while Mr and Mrs Clutterbuck collected their Hyundai from Paul Sharp, the centre principal.

Holdcroft are helping the Mayor on the last stretch of his fundraising year by donating £10 for every new and used car they sell in March, to try to help him reach his goal of £52,000, which will be donated to local good causes.

Cllr Qumer has nominated three main beneficiaries for his fundraising year - Maggie’s Oldham, Oldham Action Fund and the Ghazali Trust - all of whom perform sterling work within the borough.

The recent Mayor's ball at the Civic Centre was a resounding success, raising £11,000 on the night, leaving a running total of just over £40,000.

Cllr Qumer said: “I have had a wonderful time in office and feel very privileged to have been able to serve the people of Oldham.

"It has certainly opened my eyes to see the amount of good work that goes on behind the scenes by the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to provide facilities and services to those who really need it.

"It has spurred me on to put all my effort into these last few weeks to achieve my fund-raising goal, so that we can give a helping hand to as many people as possible.

"We still have a number of fund raising events to come in the next few weeks, culminating with this year’s big event on May 5 when for some insane reason I have decided to jump out of an aeroplane while it is moving at I don’t know how many thousand feet!"
